Step gently

Sleek doe
with frozen hooves
scared
of
you
still, poised
at the top
of this hill
quivering when leaves
crisp
under your
step.

Cannot be
touched
only caught
by
your sleight of hand.
Slender face
nuzzles the
black hollow fingers
and quakes,
scared of
you
your hand
and all its heat
supernal light
in your
eyes.

Trembling
spindle legs
pricking
the ground in
quick small
steps,
and you
in pursuit
leave a
trail of sparks
to glow
in winter’s
aftermath.

You keep
for
ever
that which
you
tame.
